Overview

English Concentration

To fulfill the English Concentration, students, after completing ENG 101  and ENG 102 , should choose three courses from the following list of required and elective courses:

ACADEMIC CONCENTRATION REQUIREMENTS:

ENG 201  or ENG 202 
ENG 203  or ENG 204 
ENG 209  or ENG 210 
ENG 218  - requires permission of instructor

ACADEMIC CONCENTRATION ELECTIVES:

Select no more than two: ENG 205 ENG 206 ENG 207 ENG 208 ENG 212 ENG 213 ENG 215 ENG 216 ENG 221 ENG 223 ENG 224 ENG 225 ENG 227 ENG 229 ENG 230 ENG 231 ENG 263 ENG 264 ENG 267 ENG 268 ENG 269  
Note: Students transferring two or more of the following courses (ENG 201 , ENG 202 , ENG 203  and ENG 204 ) will need to complete a supplemental literature course at New Paltz to meet the minimum number of credits for their English concentration.

FOURTH SEMESTER:

SUNY New Paltz recommends that students with an academic concentration in English take one of the following:

ENG 212 , ENG 213 , ENG 264 , ENG 267  (World History & Global Awareness)

History Concentration

To fulfill academic concentration courses in history and the required U.S. History & Civic Engagement course, students must choose courses from the following list of required and elective courses. Additionally, be sure to take note of the fourth semester recommendations at the end of this list for World History & Global Awareness.

ACADEMIC CONCENTRATION REQUIREMENTS:

Choose at least three and a maximum of four courses from the following categories, taking at least one course in each area and a mix of time periods:

Category A:

HIS 103 - History of the United States I 
HIS 104 - History of the United States II  

Category B:

HIS 101 - Western Civilization: Ancient Near East to 1700 
HIS 102 - Western Civilization From 1700 to the Present  

Category C:

HIS 107 - History of World Civilizations Before 1700 
HIS 108 - History of World Civilizations Since 1700  

Additional required course: GOV 121 - The American National Experience  

ACADEMIC CONCENTRATION ELECTIVES:

Choose no more than one course from the following electives:

History Survey in another world region or country:

HIS 206 - Latin American History 
HIS 207 - History of Russia and the Soviet Union 

Additional electives: HIS 209, HIS 210 HIS 214 HIS 216 HIS 220  

Fourth Semester:

SUNY New Paltz recommends that students with an academic concentration in history take one of the following courses:
