HIS 206 - Latin American History

A study of the major social, economic, political, intellectual and cultural developments in Latin American history. Students will explore the roles of race, ethnicity, gender, class, and religion in shaping Latin American history. Topics include: patterns of pre-colonial indigenous life and the Maya, Aztec, and Inca empires; the European colonial period and its impact on indigenous people and enslaved Africans; struggles for independence and the development of new nations in the early 19th century; postcolonial politics, economics, societies, and cultures; 20th century political, economic, and social developments, including relations with the United States; and recent movements for political change and social justice.
