MUS 138 - Jazz Improvisation Credits: 1 Lecture Hours: 0 Lab Hours: 2 This course introduces musical concepts and develops performance skills for improvisation in a variety of musical contexts. Students bring instruments/voice to class, as learning is primarily hands-on and experiential. Ability to read music at least at a basic level is necessary. Music theory is also presented and discussed as needed, and recorded examples of important developments in various styles of improvisation are listened to, analyzed and discussed in class. Notes: Concurrent enrollment in MUS 131 /MUS 132 /MUS 231 /MUS 232 : Jazz Ensemble and/or MUS 135 - Jazz History and/or private lessons (MUS 141 /MUS 142 /MUS 241 /MUS 242 /MUS 161 /MUS 162 /MUS 261 /MUS 262 , or MUS 210 /MUS 211 ) is highly recommended.
